FM spokesman offers condolences to Japan over flood disaster

TEHRAN, Jul. 08 (MNA) –Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman extended sympathies to Japanese government and people over the cataclysmic flood and landslide in western and central Japan.

Bahram Ghasemi, the Spokesman of Iranian Foreign Ministry, issued a formal letter of condolences offering sympathies to Japanese government and people, especially the bereaved families, over the “bitter loss of some lives in flood and landslide.”

He has voiced deep sorrows over the catastrophe which has left at least 66 people dead and many more missing.

Record-shattering torrential rains hit western and central Japan on Saturday, forcing more than 1.6 million people to leave their places while 3.1 million others were advised to evacuate from their homes.

According to Japan's Meteorological Agency, in Motoyama, a town on Shikoku Island, about 180 kilometers south of Hiroshima, 583 millimeters of rain fell between Friday and Saturday morning.

Around 1,000 people have been left stranded in Kurashiki. The city has a population of just under 500,000, and was hit hardest by the torrential rains.
